IB Diploma Programme
Grades 11 and 12
Here at TJ, we offer three routes to accessing IB Diploma level classes. Both the IB Diploma Programme (Full and Partial) and the IB Career Programme are designed as academically challenging and balanced programmes of education with final examinations that prepares students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. Both programmes are normally taught over two years and have gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities. For more information about the requirements of our 11th and 12th grade IB programmes and answers to Frequently Asked Questions, please access our IB Handbook. You can also email our IB DP Coordinator, Mrs. Kailey Harem
All our IB classes are pre-university courses of study designed to meet the needs of 21st century students and to promote international understanding in an increasingly global society.
The effectiveness of the IB program is due not only to the depth of the individual courses, but also to the comprehensive nature of the program. Students are not asked to just memorize information but challenged to apply their skills and knowledge to show understanding.
Unlike other elective honors programs, the Full IB Diploma Programme requires each student to take courses in six academic areas. In order to qualify for the International Baccalaureate Diploma, students must take written examinations in six subject areas, plus a course called Theory of Knowledge. In addition, the students must participate in a creative project and community service activity. Students also write an Extended Essay. This option is the most rigorous course of study offered to our students.
The IB Career Programme combines both CTE classes and IB Diploma Classes. Students can earn the Career Programme certificate by taking an accredited CTE pathway and complimenting IB Diploma courses. Students need to complete the Language Portfolio and the Reflective Project. This is a great option for students who want to challenge themselves to something extra but don’t want to complete the Full IB Diploma Programme.
Partial IB DP Programme students may elect to take and test in one or more IB Diploma-level classes without being Full IB Diploma or Career Programme candidates With a range of classes that challenge students to excel in their areas of interest, all students are encouraged to try at least one IB DP class in high school.
Students earning the IB Diploma are awarded advanced standing at prestigious universities around the world. Many colleges and universities recognize the IB Diploma for admissions or course credit. In the State of Washington, every score of a 4 or higher on an IB exam will earn the student college credit at any public 2 or 4 Year University.
